Selecting a Chiller for Glycol

A glycol mixture can provide freeze protection, but concentration depends on the fluid product and the lowest expected temperature. Ethylene and propylene glycol have different properties.

Technical assessment

Density, specific heat and viscosity differ from those of water. Do not apply a water-only flow factor, pressure-drop calculation or catalogue capacity directly to a glycol mixture.

Operating conditions and limits

Use mixture properties at the actual temperature in Q = ρ × cp × V̇ × ΔT. Check the pump curve, motor load, exchanger performance and material compatibility together.

Information needed for selection

Provide the application, operating hours, cooling load, entering and leaving liquid temperatures, fluid type and concentration, flow, site location and environmental conditions. A nominal capacity alone does not replace a detailed equipment selection.

Frequently asked question

Does this guide replace a product performance sheet?

No. It explains selection inputs and technical limits. Confirm the final model, capacity and options through a manufacturer selection at the actual operating conditions.
