Chiller Pump and Flow Selection

Flow follows the heat load and liquid temperature difference. Pump head follows the hydraulic losses of the circuit. These are separate selection requirements.

Technical assessment

For water, V̇ ≈ Q / (1.163 × ΔT), with Q in kW, V̇ in m³/h and ΔT in °C. A 100 kW load at a 5 °C difference needs about 17.2 m³/h; this does not establish the required pump head.

Operating conditions and limits

Calculate pipe, fitting, valve, strainer and exchanger losses. Check the intersection of pump and system curves, permitted equipment flow, motor power and cavitation conditions. Static building height alone is not the circulation head in a closed loop.

Information needed for selection

Provide the application, operating hours, cooling load, entering and leaving liquid temperatures, fluid type and concentration, flow, site location and environmental conditions. A nominal capacity alone does not replace a detailed equipment selection.

Frequently asked question

Does this guide replace a product performance sheet?

No. It explains selection inputs and technical limits. Confirm the final model, capacity and options through a manufacturer selection at the actual operating conditions.
